Morgan Rushworth XTM Tube and Section Laser Cutting Machine
The Morgan Rushworth XTM is a high-speed CNC tube laser cutting machine designed for accurate and efficient processing of tubes, box sections and other profiles.
Available in 14 configurations, the XTM combines three profile-capacity ranges with 6,000 mm or 7,500 mm material lengths and fibre laser sources from 3 kW to 12 kW. This allows fabricators to select a machine matched closely to their required profile dimensions, production speed and material-processing demands.
With axis acceleration of 1.5 G, feed speeds of up to 120 m/min and a specified cycle time of 13 seconds, the XTM is designed for productive batch manufacturing without compromising accuracy or repeatability.
Three Profile-Capacity Ranges
The Morgan Rushworth XTM is available in three principal size ranges:
- XTM 23: Tube diameters from 20–230 mm and box sections from 20 × 20 mm up to 230 × 230 mm
- XTM 28: Tube diameters from 20–280 mm and box sections from 20 × 20 mm up to 280 × 280 mm
- XTM 36: Tube diameters from 20–360 mm and box sections from 20 × 20 mm up to 360 × 360 mm
The XTM 23 and XTM 28 are available with either 3 kW or 6 kW fibre laser sources. The larger XTM 36 can be specified with 3 kW, 6 kW or 12 kW.
Each capacity range is available for maximum material lengths of either 6,000 mm or 7,500 mm, providing a total of 14 configurations across the XTM range.
Advanced Software for Complex Profiles
At the heart of the Morgan Rushworth XTM is Lantek Flex3d, specialist CAD/CAM and nesting software developed specifically for tube and profile laser cutting.
The software supports the programming of round, square, rectangular, triangular and oval profiles, as well as more complex components and structural designs. It allows operators to create cutting paths, place features accurately and nest multiple components efficiently along the available material length.
Advanced functions support processes such as component splicing, joint creation and the development of structural assemblies that require fewer separate parts or welded connections. Large quantities of smaller components can also be nested and produced repeatedly, helping improve material utilisation and reduce programming time.
Compatibility with commonly used CAD formats helps the XTM integrate into existing design and production workflows.
Rigid Construction and Precision Motion
The XTM is built around a high-strength rigid gantry designed to provide a stable foundation for accurate cutting.
A precision-class alpha rack-and-pinion motion system delivers controlled movement across the machine’s working area. Combined with the fibre laser source and beam-delivery system, this supports consistent cutting performance across a wide range of profile sizes and material types.
All models provide an absolute positioning accuracy of ±0.05 mm and X- and Y-axis repeatability of ±0.03 mm. This level of control makes the XTM suitable for components requiring accurate hole positions, slots, joints and other detailed features.
High-Speed Processing
Performance is matched to the profile capacity of each machine:
- The XTM 23 provides chuck speeds of up to 130 rpm and feed speeds of up to 120 m/min
- The XTM 28 provides chuck speeds of up to 80 rpm and feed speeds of up to 100 m/min
- The XTM 36 provides chuck speeds of up to 60 rpm and feed speeds of up to 60 m/min
All three capacity ranges provide axis acceleration of 1.5 G and a specified cycle time of 13 seconds.
This combination of rapid movement, controlled rotation and accurate positioning enables the XTM to process both individual components and repeated batches efficiently.
Servo-Controlled Material Support
Servo-controlled infeed and outfeed supports provide active assistance as material moves through the machine. These supports help keep tubes and sections correctly positioned during feeding, rotation and cutting.
Maintaining controlled support is particularly important when processing longer profiles or materials approaching the upper end of the machine’s weight capacity. It helps reduce unwanted movement, protect the workpiece and maintain consistent cutting accuracy throughout the material length.
Heavy-Duty Material Handling
Despite its high-speed performance, the XTM is capable of handling substantial individual tube and bundle weights.
Maximum single-tube capacity is:
- 225 kg on the XTM 23
- 400 kg on the XTM 28
- 530 kg on the XTM 36
All three capacity ranges support bundle or semi-automatic loading weights of up to 2,500 kg.
Bundle and semi-automatic loading options help reduce manual material handling and allow operators to prepare multiple profiles for production. Automatic clamping and controlled material support further simplify setup between components.
For businesses processing flat bar or open-sided profiles such as channel and angle, an optional magazine loading system can be specified where appropriate.
Reduced Scrap Length
The XTM is designed to make efficient use of raw material by limiting the length of the remaining end section.
For profiles below 100 mm, the specified scrap length is approximately 50–80 mm. For profiles measuring 100 mm and above, the specified scrap length is approximately 180–200 mm.
Reducing the unusable remnant from each tube can produce meaningful material savings, particularly across high-volume or repeat production work.
Flexible Fibre Laser Power
The choice of 3 kW, 6 kW or 12 kW fibre laser power allows the XTM to be configured around the intended material mix and production requirements.
The 3 kW configurations provide an efficient solution for general tube and section processing, while 6 kW offers increased cutting performance and throughput. The 12 kW option, available on the XTM 36, extends the machine’s capabilities for more demanding production and heavier-wall materials.
This flexibility allows businesses to invest in the power level they need while retaining the profile capacity and material length most appropriate for their workload.
