A quotation for a CNC machine gives you an important number, but it does not describe the cost of producing your parts. Running costs depend on the process, the material, the workload and the way the workshop is organised. Put the same representative jobs through every option you compare.
Separate fixed costs from cost per part
Start with the capital cost, installation, training and the space or infrastructure the machine needs. Then model the variable costs: electricity, gas or water where applicable, cutting or forming consumables, tooling, maintenance and labour. Ask how often material is replaced, how much scrap is produced and whether a second machine or operator is needed to finish the part.
Do not compare two technologies on machine time alone. A process with a faster cut may need more finishing or manual handling. Another may be slower at the tool but deliver a more complete part.
Compare costs by process and workload
For a fibre laser, include assist gas, optics and nozzles, extraction and material utilisation. For a plasma machine, include the relevant torch consumables, gas or compressed air, extraction and any finishing. For a turret punch, account for tooling, maintenance and the work that can be completed in one pass. Use the actual configuration offered, not an assumed industry average.
Batch size changes the arithmetic. Frequent short runs can spend a significant share of time in programming and setup. Larger repeat batches may make automated loading or nesting more valuable. Our batch size and automation article explains why a headline cutting speed is only one part of the answer.
Ask for a job-based comparison
Select a common part, a difficult part and a high-volume part. For each, list raw material cost, programming, setup, cycle time, consumables, handling, finishing, inspection and scrap. Use consistent assumptions across the shortlisted machines, then add maintenance and support over the expected ownership period. The result is a more useful basis for investment than a single quoted machine price.
