Morgan Rushworth XTL Three-Chuck Tube & Section Laser Cutting Machine

Heavy-Duty Laser Cutting for Large, Long and Heavy Profiles

The Morgan Rushworth XTL is a heavy-duty, three-chuck CNC fibre laser cutting system developed for processing long, large-diameter and heavy tubes and sections.

Available in five capacity ranges, the XTL can accommodate tube diameters from 20 mm up to 630 mm and box sections from 20 × 20 mm up to 630 × 630 mm. Material lengths of 6,000 mm, 7,500 mm and 12,000 mm are available, allowing the machine to be configured around a wide variety of structural and industrial applications.

The three-chuck arrangement, combined with servo-controlled infeed and outfeed supports, provides secure material handling throughout the cutting cycle. This helps maintain alignment and stability when processing long or heavy profiles, supporting accurate and repeatable production.

Key Features and Capabilities

Three-Chuck Material Control

The XTL uses three chucks to support and control the material as it moves through the machine. Maintaining support at multiple points helps reduce vibration, movement and deflection during positioning and cutting.

This is particularly important when processing long lengths, large-diameter tubes or profiles weighing several tonnes. The chuck system works alongside servo-controlled infeed and outfeed supports to provide stable, controlled handling throughout the cutting process.

Five Tube and Section Capacity Ranges

The XTL range is available with maximum tube and box-section capacities of:

  • 280 mm
  • 360 mm
  • 450 mm
  • 550 mm
  • 630 mm

The XTL 28 models process round tube from 20–280 mm and box section from 20 × 20 mm up to 280 × 280 mm. At the upper end of the range, the XTL 63 models accommodate tube diameters from 20–630 mm and box sections up to 630 × 630 mm.

This broad selection allows fabricators to specify a machine suited to their normal workload without compromising on future capacity.

6 kW, 12 kW and 20 kW Fibre Laser Sources

The XTL is available with 6 kW, 12 kW and 20 kW fibre laser sources, depending on the selected machine capacity.

The 280 mm models are available with 6 kW or 12 kW laser sources. Models with 360 mm, 450 mm, 550 mm and 630 mm capacities can also be specified with a 20 kW laser source.

This selection enables the XTL to be configured for anything from general tube and section processing to high-output production involving thicker-wall materials.

High Cutting Capacities

With the appropriate laser source and cutting gas, the XTL delivers substantial cutting capacities across ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

The 6 kW configuration can cut carbon steel up to 20 mm, stainless steel and aluminium up to 15 mm, brass up to 10 mm and copper up to 8 mm.

Moving to a 12 kW laser source increases maximum cutting capacity to 30 mm for carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium, 15 mm for brass and 14 mm for copper.

For the most demanding applications, the 20 kW configuration provides cutting capacities of up to 40 mm in carbon and stainless steel, 35 mm in aluminium, 20 mm in brass and 18 mm in copper.

Actual cutting performance will depend on factors including material grade, wall thickness, profile geometry, cutting gas and the selected machine configuration.

Processing Lengths up to 12 Metres

Each capacity range is available with maximum material lengths of 6,000 mm, 7,500 mm or 12,000 mm.

These options make the XTL suitable for both conventional tube processing and applications involving long structural sections. Selecting the appropriate infeed and outfeed length can also help reduce unnecessary material preparation and secondary handling.

Heavy-Duty Loading Capacity

The XTL is designed to handle substantial individual tube and bundle weights. Maximum single-tube capacity increases according to machine size:

  • Up to 600 kg on the 280 mm model
  • Up to 1,200 kg on the 360 mm model
  • Up to 1,500 kg on the 450 mm model
  • Up to 2,000 kg on the 550 mm model
  • Up to 3,000 kg on the 630 mm model

Maximum bundle or semi-automatic loading capacity ranges from 1,800 kg on the XTL 28 to 9,000 kg on the XTL 63.

Servo-controlled infeed and outfeed supports assist with the controlled movement of these large and heavy materials, reducing manual handling and helping maintain the correct position throughout production.

Accurate and Repeatable Production

All XTL models provide an absolute positioning accuracy of ±0.05 mm.

The 280 mm, 360 mm and 450 mm models provide X- and Y-axis repeatability of ±0.03 mm, while the larger 550 mm and 630 mm models provide repeatability of ±0.05 mm.

Axis acceleration of 0.5 G is used throughout the range. Feed speeds reach up to 60 m/min on the 280 mm, 360 mm and 450 mm models, with speeds of 35 m/min on the 550 mm model and 30 m/min on the 630 mm model.

CAD/CAM Programming and Material Nesting

Professional tube CAD/CAM and nesting software provides an efficient workflow from component design through to production.

Parts can be programmed and nested to make effective use of available material, reduce waste and simplify the production of repeated components. Integration with the machine control allows operators to manage cutting paths, feature positions and production settings from a central interface.

Installation, Training and UK-Based Support

The Morgan Rushworth XTL is supported by Selmach’s UK-based installation, commissioning, training and aftercare services.

Operator training helps businesses introduce the machine effectively, while ongoing engineering and service support provides dependable assistance throughout the machine’s working life.
