Both belt-driven and geared-head pillar drills can produce accurate holes when the machine, tooling and setup suit the work. The useful question is how often your team will change materials and hole sizes, and how demanding the regular workload will be.
Where a belt-driven drill fits
A belt-driven pillar drill is a straightforward option for general drilling where the available speed settings cover the materials and tools in use. It can suit a workshop with varied, relatively light work that does not demand frequent changes between very different cutting conditions. Check how speed changes are made on the particular machine and whether that process fits your day-to-day work.
Selmach’s Meyer SL32 is one of the belt-driven models in the current pillar drill range. Compare its published capacity, table and speed options with the jobs you expect it to handle, not simply with another machine’s motor rating.
Where a geared head fits
A geared-head drill is often considered for regular industrial use, particularly where operators need a robust drive and a selection of speeds for different materials and hole diameters. The geared-head Meyer SR range includes machines with different capacities and features, so you can still choose a modest machine for modest work or a larger one for heavier parts.
The Meyer SR25 and SR32AE illustrate why the drive type is only the start of the decision: capacity, feed and tapping functions differ too. Do not assume every geared machine has the same operating features.
Compare the complete job
List your usual material, hole diameter, drilling depth, required speed range and number of holes per shift. Then add the size and weight of the largest part, whether coolant is needed and whether tapping will be performed on the same machine. The right choice is the one that accommodates the whole operation safely and repeatedly.
If tapping or repeated drilling makes up a sizeable part of your work, read when power feed and tapping are worth specifying. For the broader specification, use our pillar drill buyer’s guide. Selmach can discuss both drive options using your actual parts and production pattern; send us your requirements.
