Fixed or Moving Ram on an H-Frame Press?

Most press comparisons begin with tonnage. The position at which that force can be applied is just as important when parts vary in size or several operations are required across one component. A moving ram can increase setup flexibility, but it must be assessed alongside the bed, frame and permitted loading arrangement.

A fixed pressing point

A fixed-ram setup can be straightforward for repeat jobs where the component and fixture can be brought beneath the pressing point. If most of your work is a small range of bearings, bushes or simple forming operations, changing the component setup may be practical. Record how many times the part must be repositioned and how securely it can be supported each time.

When lateral adjustment helps

A moving-ram arrangement may help when the part is awkward to shift or the pressing point changes across its width. It can reduce handling in some jobs and allow a fixture to remain in place. Check the actual machine’s adjustment, available opening, controls and load restrictions. The fact that a ram can move does not mean every position is suitable for every force or tooling arrangement.

Selmach’s Morgan Rushworth H-frame range includes HFP, HFPV and HFPX models with different specifications. Use the current product pages and a machine demonstration to establish exactly how a shortlisted model is configured. Do not infer a ram arrangement from its model letters alone.

Compare a representative part

Put a drawing of your largest or most awkward component beside the press’s working area. Mark each intended pressing point and the support points beneath the work. Include any V-blocks, plates or dedicated fixtures in the drawing. This gives a clearer answer than asking whether a moving ram is generally ‘better’.

The hydraulic H-frame press buyer’s guide covers force, daylight and stroke as well. Discuss your part with Selmach if you need help comparing practical setups, particularly where load position or workholding is unusual.
